Cremation Date changed to May 23, 2012
Dharma sisters and brothers and friends!
I am very very sorry to announce at such short notice that we have to change the date of the cremation due to considerations according to Tibetan astrology. This matter has been brought to our attention only very recently. The star movements of the 18th May, which is the 28th of the 3rd Tibetan month, is "Thur Go Che" ("open graveyard gate") which means an increased chance for a second cremation in our community and at that same day there is also the constellation called "Ba Den" which means that one should not erect banners and not hang prayer flags that day. If one does anyway, the positive effect is inverted, instead of good it does harm. We have discussed the matter at length with H.E. Drubwang Sange Nyenpa Rinpoche and have come to the following decision:
Due to the circumstances the cremation will be postponed to the 23rd of May, which is definitely confirmed.
All the star constellations on that day are very suitable and very good.
On behalf of the Benchen community I would like to apologize for the delay. We don't want to change it to an earlier date since those of our Sangha that can not change their schedules at least are able to give homage to Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's Kudung. In any event, it is considered much more important to be able to see the Precious Kudung and receive its blessings, than to attend the cremation ceremonies.
Again, we are very sorry.
Namaste Tempa. -

News from Benchen Monastery (May 26, 2012)
Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's old attendants (shabji) Jinpa, Sherab, Geleg, Tashi Öser and I had a meeting and decided to open the cremation stupa (phur khang) that is closed at the moment on Thursday the 31st of May at 6:00 am. There will be a ritual ceremony. The relics of Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche that are there will be placed in a copper vase and the ashes will be put in brocade sacks. Then in a traditional procession these relics will be led in circumambulation around the Gompa and placed in Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's personal room where they will remain for some time.
We have started today to build the stupa that will contain the precious relics of Tenga Rinpoche. It will be five feet eight inch tall and be made out of silver and gold-plated carved copper by the best artist in Kathmandu that we have chosen. This stupa will be placed in the Tara Shrine-Room.
On the 22nd in the morning we had a meeting with the board members of the Singaporean Benchen Karma Choeling Center. We discussed and shared information about the center's activity about how to continuously run it according to Rinpoche's wishes. We gave the center a set of Rinpoche's worn robes for commemoration, as object for offerings, to receive merit and good energy.
On the 24th we had a meeting at dinner with the Malaysian Benchen Karma Kamtshang Ling center. We have given them a similar set of Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's robes to continuously fulfill Rinpoche's aspiration for the center.
On the same evening we have given another set of Rinpoche's robes to the Benchen Karma Kamtshang Center of Grabnik Poland. Lama Rinchen continues to warmly welcome us attendants and maintains the close relationship with the shabjis.
After the dinner we shabjis had a discussion with the Dharma Haus Benchen Tashi Ling in Cologne lead by Lioba, Martin, Thea and Tashi Boldt on how to continuously fulfill Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's wishes and we shared information and knowledge. After that we have given their center a whole set of Rinpoche's worn robes in order to display on the shrine. Furthermore, we shabjis want to give Rinpoche's used robes to the Benchen Phuntsok Ling Center Allmuthen and Benchen Karma Geleg Dargye Ling Center Odense in the summer so that they may be placed in the shrines.
After the collection of Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's relics we shabjis are going to see H.H. Karmapa. On the 1st-2nd we Jinpa, Sherab, Geleg, Tashi Özer, Karma and myself are leaving to Gyuto Monastery in order to visit H.H. Karmapa and requesting when and where Tenga Rinpoche's reincarnation will be reborn, moreover, we requested his holiness to direct his mind towards Rinpoche's rebirth. A few days later we will be back to Kathmandu.
That's all for now.

The Ritual Opening of the Purkhang, 31 May 2012
At 6:00 a.m. this morning, the ceremonies for the ritual opening of Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's Purkhang, or cremation stupa, began as scheduled. Led by Sangter Tulku Rinpoche, the Vajra Master of Benchen Monastery, Lama Tsültrim Rabten, the Retreat Master Lama Karma Gyatso, and our three Khenpos, Sönam Gyurme, Tsöndrü and Tsewang, as well as Rinpoche's closest former attendants and administrators, Lama Geleg, Tenpa Yarphel, Sherab Wangchug, Jinpa Lodrö and Tashi Öser, preparations were begun to retrieve Rinpoche's precious remains out of the remaining cremation ashes. At first a brief purification ritual was conducted to cleanse away any possible contaminations of the surroundings. This was followed by a short ceremony known as "The Descent of Blessing." After this a serkyem or special drink offering was presented to the dharma protectors and local deities on each of the purkhang's four sides.
That concluded, the openings of the purkhang, which had been sealed with bricks right after the cremation's conclusion, were opened and the retrieval of the Precious Remains began. There was a surprising amount of bone matter, first and foremost among them a large piece of Rinpoche's skull, spine and joints. The skull was placed in a special copper receptacle, and all other remains were placed in a large copper vase. What else remained in the way of ashes etc. was placed in various brocade and silk sacks. After all was retrieved Rinpoche's remains were led in a ritual procession around the monastery and were eventually placed in his personal quarters.
As an auspicious circumstance for Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's swift rebirth, good health and long life, auspicious prayers as well as tea and sweet rice were offered both in the main shrine hall as well as in the presence of Rinpoche's remains. Today also coincides with the last day of an elaborate long-life practcice, known as Tsedrub Sangdü, which was performed during the last week, for the long life of H.E. Drubwang Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche and the future incarnation of Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche. The corresponding tormas and long-life substances were offered to Rinpoche's Precious remains.
Tomorrow, 1 June, Rinpoche's oldest and closest attendants, Lama Geleg Paljor, Tenpa Yarphel, Sherab Wangchug, Jinpa Lodrö, Tashi Öser and Karma, will travel to India to meet H.H. the Karmapa. They will relate to H.H. all the details of the last weeks and will officially request H.H. to look for the rebirth of Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche, so that we will be swiftly re-united with him. After the return of those six, we will look very slowly and carefully through the Precious Remains of Rinpoche, to see what relics he might possibly have left us. We will keep you informed on this website. Do check back from time to time. All the best for all of you from Kathmandu.
Pictures will follow very soon!

Relics of Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche (June 1, 2012)
You all know that we opened the the phur khang (cremation stupa). Now there is the breaking news: this afternoon Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's shabjis discretely went through the relics with great care because when we visit H.H. Karmapa we are required to explain all the details. For these reasons we reinspected the relics. You all know that Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche left his skull cup in which we haven't found any letters or relic pills up until now. Then we looked through the remaining bones one by one, so far we could not find any syllables that appeared or see any relic pills till now. We heard that it can happen that the relic pills grow later on.
Then there was left what appeared to be a leg bone joined with something burned and black, quite big. Slowly we cleaned away the burned black coating. Then slowly underneath this coating we discovered the whole of Rinpoche's spine. The hip bone completely burned away. On the spine in the neck area attached is the heart, lungs, liver, tongue and the lower part looks like the kidney. We could not find the eyes. All was attached together and became one pice while all the details clearly show.
When great masters pass away and leave these organs usually the eyes are included but we could not identify them. This relic Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche left is very precious and will be placed in the stupa that is going to be in the Tara shrine. This is really amazing and very rare.
So, that's all for now.

A Visit to H.H. the Karmapa
As previously reported, Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's closest attendants, Lama Geleg Paljor, Tenpa Yarphel, Sherab Wangchuk, Jinpa Lodrö, Tashi Öser and Karma went to see H.H. the Karmapa, mainly to express their gratitude for his never-ending support in this difficult time, also on behalf of all of the Benchen Monastery community. Before doing so, they had requested H.E. Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche's blessing and advice. Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche fully agreed with the mission and gave his wholehearted blessing for it. Having thus travelled to India, on the morning of 4 June, which corresponded to the 15th day or full moon of Saga Dawa, they were then fortunate to actually see H.H. the 17th Karmapa Orgyen Thrinle Dorje at his residence at Gyutö Monastery in India. On this occasion, Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's attendants were able to offer a full set of wooden and fully painted Phurpas, required for the extensive Vajrakila-Drubchen, to H.H. This was one of the express wishes of Tenga Rinpoche and he asked repeatedly to go ahead with this.
During the meeting H.H. the Karmapa took lots of time to listen to all the details of what had occurred, from the time shortly before Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's passing until the cremation and retrieving of his Precious Remains. These events were mainly related by Tenpa Yarphel, the General Secretary of Tenga Rinpoche. During this audience, among other things, H.H. the Karmapa's advice was asked as to where and how to keep the Precious Remains of Rinpoche.
To give a more complete list of what Rinpoche left us, there is a large piece of Rinpoche's skull, his entire spine, thigh bones and joints. However the most precious and miraculous is that Rinpoche left us his heart, tongue and lungs. These pieces have melded together with parts of the spine. Photos were taken of all of these for H.H. the Karmapa to have a good look at them. H.H. rejoiced greatly and said that for a master to leave his heart etc. is the greatest and most holy of all relics! H.H. also remarked that just the way Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche remained in Thugdam, was the ultimate sign and proof of how great and incomparable a master he was.
H.H.'s advice now is the following: Rinpoche's heart and skull should be enshrined in a statue that will be made to look like Rinpoche himself. This statue will be placed in front of the stupa which will house the majority of the other Precious remains. The larger pieces of bone matter will be enshrined in the aforementioned stupa, which will be five feet tall, to be constructed in the monastery's Tara shrine room. Another, three-story large stupa will be constructed in front of the Naro-Drubkhang, Benchen Drubde Ösal Ling, in Pharping. This large stupa will contain many tsatsa which will be prepared from whatever smaller bone matter and cremation ashes are left. In the groundfloor of this stupa will be an accesible room that will contain a three-dimensional mandala of White Tara and paintings of her various aspects.
Both stupas will be constructed according to the ritual tradition of "Drime Namnyi." The stupa in the Tara shrineroom will be of the type called "Jangchub Chörten" or "Enlightenment Stupa," according to the measurements and directions of H.H. the 15th Karmapa Kakhyab Dorje. Already a few years ago, when Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche visited H.H. the 17th Karmapa in Gyuto Monastery in India, the construction of such a stupa was discussed and approved by H.H. At this time the Gyalwa Karmapa actually drew a sketch of such a stupa and marked all the various parts of it by name. This happened while H.H. requested Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche to introduce to him the various types of stupas and their designs. H.H. then took the opportunity on this occasion to introduce Tenga Rinpoche to a slightly variant tradition of stupa design, originating with the 15th Karmapa Kakhyab Dorje. Rinpoche's reliquary stupa will be constructed according to this tradition. The stupa in Pharping will be of the type known as "Lhabab Chörten" or "Descent from the Tushita Heavens Stupa" which signifies Buddha Shakyamuni's descent from the heavens of the gods to earth.
H.H. the Karmapa said: "Since Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche served for so many years as H.H. the 16th Karmapa's Vajra Master in Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim, it would be very good if a few of Rinpoche's Precious Relics could be sent there as well, in order to serve as a support and inspiration for our faithful followers there. I will then personally ask them to construct a small stupa there to contain these Precious Remains." Accordingly we will offer a small portion of the relics to Rumtek monastery.
Previously, while thanking H.H. for his support and help, an official request on behalf of Benchen Monastery was presented to H.H. the Karmapa, asking him to please keep in mind to look for the rebirth (yang srid) of Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche. On this matter H.H. said that he had already discussed the same with Rinpoche several years ago, when Rinpoche came to visit him in Gyuto Monastery. On the occasion Tenga Rinpoche had remarked that he would definitely not be reborn in Tibet, but rather closer to H.H. the Karmapa so as to make it easier to establish contact with him. When discussing the matter, H.H. the Karmapa mentioned that he had the hope that the rebirth of Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche would return soon.
On that same day, in the afternoon of 4 June, Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's attendants then went to Palpung Sherab Ling in order to pay their respects to H.E. the Kenting Tai Situ Rinpoche. Through the great help of Situ Rinpoche's staff, it was very easy to have an appointment with H.E. and they took to opportunity to thank him for all of his help and support. On the occasion they also received the oral transmission for a prayer for the Swift Rebirth of Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche which Situ Rinpoche had recently composed.
On the next day, 5 June, H.H. the Karmapa invited Tenga Rinpoche's attendants for lunch at the Norbu Lingka. During this lunch most of the aforementioned advice on how to proceed with the Precious Remains and the construction of the stupas was pronounced by H.H. During the later part of the meal, H.H. gave more precious advice on which we will report in a few days time. Please check back frequently.
All in all, we were overjoyed and felt extremely blessed by the very warm welcome and reception by H.H. and his staff. We would also like to express our heartfelt thanks for the hospitality and help of the entire Tsurphu Labrang.

Relic Pills
Already the visit to India is posted on the website.
Yesterday 8th June 3:00pm Tashi Özer, Lama Yönten Palsang, Lama Karma Döndrub, Lama Geleg and myself, we carefully sieved and looked through Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's ashes.
In total there are 4 bags of Rinpoche's ashes of which we, so far, opened and inspected one. We found 37 relic pills, some of them have a shining golden-yellow, shining copper like red, silver-white, grey color and some are dark. To see this we are very happy and all of us can be very proud to know such a great master.
We will try to take pictures which we want to put on the website. So, we will continuously go through Kyabje Rinpoche's ashes and let you know more later on.

Relic Stupas
Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's relic stupa which will be 5ft 8" tall and which is going to be in Tara shrine is already in the making. The second relic stupa which is going to be built in Pharping will be placed in front of the Benchen Clear Light Retreat Center and is going to be 30-40ft tall.
H.E. Sangye Nyenpa is going to perform the ground braking ceremony on the 29th of June. After that the building will start continuously.
Special news: We are continuously looking for relic pills in Kyabje Rinpoche's ashes and so far found over 500 pieces. They are copper like red, golden, silver, yellow color. A few white pills also have yellow and green shades on the same pill. Some of the pills have an attached little one or two on the side.
Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche is still recovering in Pharping and getting better. Our main monastery in Swayambhu is performing a five day Vajrayogini Drubpa. That's all for now.
Namaste, Tempa
..........................After all the traditional rituals had been performed according to the advice of H.H. the 17th Karmapa Orgyen Thrinle Dorje, Kyabje Tenga Rinpoches Precious Kudung was cremated on 23 May 2012, in accordance with his own wishes. The ceremony was conducted by Tsike Chokling Rinpoche, Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche, Tulku Damchö Rinpoche and the current Vajra Master of Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's own Benchen monastery, Lama Tsültrim Rabten. As is tradition, the purkhang or cremation stupa, was then sealed and left undisturbed for one week. When it was eventually opened, everyone was amazed at the amount of precious relics which Rinpoche was kind enough to leave behind as blessing and inspiration for old and new followers alike. First and foremost among them are Rinpoche's heart and tongue, as relics for his incomparable compassion and his never-ending teaching activity. Rinpoche also left us a large piece of his skull, his entire spine and lots of smaller bone matter. When sifting through the remaining ashes very carefully, several hundred of the relic-pills known as "ringsel" were found as well. Some are white, and some are golden-coloured or reddish like copper. There are also a few rather dark ones. These precious relics will be enshrined in a statue and stupa, to be constructed in the monastery's Tara shrine room, as well as in another stupa, which will be built in Pharping, between the two three-year-retreat centres................................
.................................Often when Master Buddhists passed away and their remains cremated, pearl-like beads known as "Ringsels" are found amongst the ashes. There are currently no scientific explanations to why such phenomenon occurs and it is believed that these beautiful relics embodies the positive spiritual quality of the deceased masters.......................................

Visit to Rumtek Monastery
According to H.H. the Karmapa's wishes on 1st July Tashi Özer, Tashi Wanggyal and myself, we left to Rumtek Monastery with Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's shirt, hair, relic bones and relic pills. In the evening we stayed at Sangter Tulku's uncle's house. 2nd July in the morning we left to Rumtek Monastery and arrived 10:00 according to the arrangement. Now is raining season and it has been raining continuously for five days and it has been foggy. At that day we arrived in Rumtek the sky was clear and the monastery together with H.E. Gyaltsap Rinpoche made a wonderful reception for the arrival of Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's relics. You can see the photos.
3rd July we went to Ralang Monastery, made offerings and then tried to find someone who knows about the construction of White Tara mandala (Lölhang). Unfortunately that person is not there anymore. Drubpön Tenzin Gyurme told us that in H.E. Trangu Rinpoche's retreat place at the Milarepa cave in Bhaktapur Nepal we can find one very good artist who has lots of experience. Hopefully we will succeed and find this person.
Today 5th July we are all back in Kathmandu.
That's all now.

We are building a stupa with Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche's relics in Grabnik!
As we have previously informed, the relics of Very Venerable Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche will be, among other things, placed in special stupas. One of them will be located in Tara's shrine room in the Benchen Monastery, another will be built in front of the three-year retreat centre in Parping, where on June 29 Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche performed the ritual of blessing the ground for the construction (Tib.: sa chok).
Some of the relics were given to the monastery in Rumtek, where Rinpoche has served as the Vajra Master for many years. And some of the relics were decided to be given to various Benchen centers around the world, including the Benchen Karma Kamtsang Centre in Grabnik.
The relics of Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche will be brought to Grabnik this summer. Due to this incredibly auspicious event we plan to build a several-metre high stupa containing these precious relics in Grabnik.
The details regarding the location and size of the stupa are to be established during Sangter Tulku Rinpoche's August visit in Poland. That is also when we will find out about the cost of the construction, which is likely to reach tens of thousands of Polish zlotys.
First we will use the money which were set aside for this purpose over fifteen years ago, when several people made donations for the already then planned construction of a stupa in Grabnik. This is about PLN 1000. Some jewelry and other items made from precious stones were also donated at that time. However, following the advice from Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche we postponed this project. Rinpoche asked us to first focus on developing the drubkhang and then a building which would improve the living conditions.
Since we always make sure to use donations according to the will of the benefactors, all jewelry donated for the stupa was carefully stored and the money booked and will now be used for the construction and filling the stupa with Rinpoche's relics.

Benchen Nunnery
We are very happy to announce the installment of the first Benchen Nunnery. It has been a long term wish of Kyabje Tenga Rinpoche to build a nunnery or retreat center for nuns, so that women can study and practice the Dharma as it is practiced in our Benchen monastery. Even though Kyabje Rinpoche already was planning to do so since the 90s, the right conditions did not come together until lately.
In 2011 a beautiful piece of land next to our Benchen Clear Light Retreat Centre for monks was up for sale. Rinpoche found this land especially suitable and perfect for the purpose of a Nunnery. Due to a generous private donation Rinpoche was able to purchase the land and an existing shell buliding.
It was Rinpoche's wish to finish the Ani Gompa perfectly. Due to Kyabje Rinpoche performing the act of passing into Parinirvarna, now it is up to us - his followers - to finish this project of Rinpoche and thus fulfill his vision. His Eminence Drubwang Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche kindly bestowed the name Benchen Arya Tara Ling for the nunnery and gave his blessing for the fulfillment of the project.
Benchen Arya Tara Ling will be very special as it will not only serve as an Ani Gompa providing education to the nuns but also will include a retreat facility so that the nuns in the course of time will be able to do the traditional 3 years and three fortnight retreat.
Please kindly consider to support this endevour to fulfill the wishes of our Lord of Refuge Tenga Rinpoche. Also there will be a tremendous benefit for the nuns and you yourself.
For further information please contact Dharma Haus Benchen Tashi Ling, Cologne dharma.haus@aol.com.
Yanglseshö - Pharping.
Pharping, a town south of Kathmandu in Nepal, is identified with the sacred site of Yangleshö (Wyl. yang le shod), where Guru Padmasambhava attained the level of a Mahamudra vidyadhara. Yangleshö is thus, according to Katok Rigdzin Tsewang Norbu, considered to be for Vajrayana practitioners as important as Bodhgaya because it is where the second buddha Guru Padmasambhava attained the state of enlightenment.
There are two major practice caves in Pharping blessed by Guru Rinpoche: the Asura cave and the Yangleshö cave. At the bottom of the flight of stairs climbing up to the Asura cave is an old and important Vajrayogini temple, the Pharping Vajravarahi temple. Other stairs also lead up to the cave. They start towards the end of the village, at Ralo Rinpoche's monastery and start by a shrine containing a self-arisen Tara on the side of an image of Ganesha. To the south of the village is the temple of Dakshinkali, one of the four Kalis surrounding the Kathmandu valley. Pharping also has several monasteries, temples and retreat centres, including Chatral Rinpoche's monastery, and the Palyul Retreat Centre, which is the residence of Khenpo Namdrol Rinpoche and home to the Rigpa Shedra.
Pharping is known to the Tibetans as Yanglseshö, and to the Nepali as Pharping (pronouce "farping"). It was also known as Phamting. Some say it is because it is the birthplace of the Phamtingpa, the heart-son of Naropa, and his brothers.[1] Chatral Rinpoche explains that the 'Indian Phamting' (rgya gar pham thing) derives its name from the presence of the great hood of the naga king Lhakmachen or Shesha which indicate that it is a place associated with him. That is why the place the learned masters of the past used to called it Phanathingu (pha na thinggu), which means 'the nine hoods', and the usage ebbed as Phamting.[2]
Pharping has not only been blessed by the master of Oddiyana's practice with his consort Shakyadevi and his attainment of the vidyadhara level of Mahamudra, it has been also visited by many great beings, like long term resident Marpa Lotsawa, who practised, made offerings, ganachakra feasts, aspiration prayers and so on.. -
